VOLUNTEER
BE AN ADVOCATE...
Domestic violence and Sexual assault can cost victims everything, including the safety of their own homes. As the largest provider of services for domestic and sexual violence victims, the DOVE Center offers advocacy where nearly 300 individuals, children and families find shelter from domestic violence each year, as well as over 700 women, men and children are connected to services they need to help them heal, recover, and regain their lives from abuse.
To provide the many services that are needed to bring hope to those that have been broken we rely heavily on the help of our volunteers; who are a critical part of the day-to-day functioning of our organization. Volunteers perform a variety of tasks such as; direct client advocacy, mentorships with women and children, children's programming, administrative work, shelter assistance, maintenance projects, outreach / awareness events, and much more. A list and description of volunteer positions are below.

Volunteer Opportunities for you to get involved
Circle of Friends
Work as part of the team planning and organizing DOVE Center's annual fundraising event along with providing awareness of the DOVE Center within the community. Assist with obtaining auction/raffle items, event sponsors and advertisers, oversee event details/creative elements and help publicize the event. Opportunities to assist are available throughout the year. Availability is flexible.
Outreach / Awareness Team*
A wide variety of development, public relations and marketing opportunities are available depending on experience, talents, and interest, such as: organize and assist with special events, developing social media, creating newsletters, researching information or clerical/administrative support. Assist with developing and attending community events and trainings designed to raise awareness. Provide basic domestic violence information at health fairs, career fairs, and other community based functions. Monitor local media for information and trends related to domestic violence and coordinate letter writing campaigns to various community and political organizations and leaders. Availability is flexible.
Presentation and Training Team*/**/***
Be a part of a team that provides awareness to fight the epidemic of domestic and dating violence within in our community. Right now we have two programs that you could team up with. CUT IT OUT: trains salon professionals to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources, and RespectME: a program to educate, advocate, and empower people to embrace dating with respect. We need trained Crisis/Court and HART Advocates to be lead trainers along with other team members.
Center Support Advocate*
Answer phones, provide resources, assist with donations, provide support to staff, and greet the general community who come to the Center. Assist in a variety of community and client support functions along with light clerical needs and administration duties. Center support assists once a week for a 4 hour shift.
Crisis /Legal Advocate**
Support and assist victims/survivors of domestic violence to define needs, explore options, and ensure rights are respected by providing needed support and community resources, CVR, assist with protective orders, stalking injunctions, and offer support during police interviews and court proceedings. Advocate may also assist DOVE House case manager with client support mentorship as needed. Advocates are on call one day a week Monday-Friday 9:00-5:00 to assist clients as needed.
Children and Youth Advocate**
Work with children in shelter or at community support group sites. Duties include spending time with children during groups for Moms, reading to and playing with children, assisting with homework, along with creating and assisting in group activities. Children's advocates' availability can be flexible, but is usually a set time each week. Our community children's group is on Wednesday nights.
Crisis line / Shelter Advocate***
Assist the DOVE House staff by; answering the crisis line by providing callers with referral information and emotional support, assist in conducting intakes for women and children who are candidates for shelter. Lend a hand with general shelter and client needs; assisting clients, sorting donations, and helping with other light duties. If agreeable, advocate can volunteer to supervise the DOVE House for short periods of time during staff meetings and trainings. Shelter advocates availability can be flexible, but is usually a set time each week. DOVE House advocate can also be Crisis/Legal advocates during their same shift.
Hospital Advocate Response Team (HART) ***
Support and assist sexual assault and domestic violence victims/survivors to define needs, explore options, and ensure rights are respected after a devastating event such as violent abuse, rape, or other sexual assault immediately after the violence has occurred and the person is at the hospital. Assist person with community resources, CVR, protective orders, stalking injunctions, along with support during police interviews and court proceedings. Medical or legal background is not necessary. Advocates are on call in the evening, throughout the night, and weekends to assist victims at the hospital after a sexual assault has occurred.
Required Training
All new volunteers except our Circle of Friends are required to attend some level of training along with the ability to pass a DHS background check. All non-direct client service volunteers will be required to complete 8* hours of online training and attend an orientation. All client direct service volunteers will attend 16** hours of more comprehensive training provided by the DOVE Center.. Rape Recovery Advocates (HART) are required by the state of Utah to attend a 40*** hour training provided by the Utah Council Against Sexual Assault. Each volunteer description shows the amount of training required by the * in front of each position. You are welcome and encouraged to begin volunteering in a less client service oriented position as you wait to complete all required trainings for the placement you desire.
* 8-hour on line training: This training is offered in two 4-hour modules, Domestic Violence and Rape and Sexual Assault. Both modules are offered on line by the Utah Domestic Violence Council (www.UDVC.org) and Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault (www.UCASA.org ) and can be completed on your own. Please down load the form below that says; 8 hour on line training to fill out and bring into our office when completed.
**16-hours of Domestic Violence Community Training: This training is provided free of charge for the general public. The classes run in a consecutive series of 8 components. We offer trainings two to three times a year. You do not need to attend all of them in order; however, all 8 classes must be completed before you can advocate directly with client.
*** 40 hour UCASA (Utah Coalition Against Sexual Assault) Training: This training is only available once a year in St. George, usually in the fall. There are also many UCASA trainings throughout the state. You can look on UCASA.org to find a training that would fit your schedule. 24 hours (3 days) are completed though a UCASA trainer and 16 hours are provided by the DOVE Center.
